Bat urine soaks 400-year-old Towneley Hall painting

CREATURES of the evening have been delivering a group of conservators 'batty'.A community of softball bats has been discovered roosting in the church at Burnley's ancient Towneley Area.But a study has discovered that the softball bats have been using a 400-year-old landscape paintings on a walls as their individual bat-hroom!

The traditional fabric, known as 'Christ and The Lady of Canaan', was coloured in the 1600s by a fan of Ludovico Carraci.It was a present from Lady Alice O’Hagan, a participant of the Towneley close relatives, who marketed the hall and it’s 62 miles of recreation area area to Burnley Authorities in 1901.Rebecca Mountain, curator of excellent art at the hall, said: “It’s one of the oddest factors I’ve handled during a study.

"The returning of the canvass was saturated with bat pee but the image was still unchanged.“We could not do anything about the softball bats but we did not want to shift the paintings either.“Bats are a secured varieties and we really like having them here."You cannot see them within the church during the day.

"I’m not even sure exactly where their home is, but in the evening they come out and fly around the church. It’s charming to see.”Rebecca added: "We sensed that the painting should remain in the church and so conservationists have now protected the returning with a unique safety support so it will be safe from bat harm."The study was performed with financing from the Edward Shares Massey bequest and was due to complete these days.
